![]() ![]() They're sitting behind one-way mirrors watching focus groups discuss them. Nobody has yet suggested that the Pentagon runs its battle plans past a group of Herndon housewives between the ages of 34 and 55 with two or more cats.īut this raises some critical questions: If focus groups are so important, how come we don't know more about them? Why aren't they carried live on C-SPAN? Why isn't Sam Donaldson standing outside of them, yelling tough questions? Why isn't Geraldo doing a show on "The Secret Meetings That Control Your Life"? Why isn't Oprah scheduling a segment on "Executives Who Can't Decide Anything Without Convening Six Focus Groups"? Well, maybe that's an exaggeration: They're only running the political and economic aspects of the country. I want to come back as a member of a focus group."Īs far as I can tell, focus groups are pretty much running the country these days. "When I die," Bush campaign aide Roger Ailes once said, "I want to come back with real power. And they are convened to pass judgment on every word, every gesture of the speeches of presidents. They sound off on the looks, the issues, the slogans and the advertisements of candidates for the House, the Senate and the presidency. They decide which ad campaigns will be seen and which will be scrapped. They decide what products will enter the American marketplace and what those products will be called and how they'll be packaged. They are convened to serve as mock juries in pretrial mock trials. No issue is too important for focus groups and no issue is too trivial. More often they discuss foot odor or Donald Duck bedsheets or the menu at Bob's Big Boy or ads for Canadian Club. Sometimes, focus groups focus on the great issues of our time - abortion and feminism and race relations and national health care. Now, focus groups are convened daily all across the country by the great alphabet soup of American institutions - ABC and AT&T and C&P and MCI and EPA and the IRS and the GAO and the AFL-CIO and the AARP and even the CIA. Madison Avenue adopted the technique after the war, but it has really taken off in the last decade. Their power is awesome but mysterious, impossible to measure. Political leaders and captains of industry don't dare to make a move without consulting them. Their every word, every gesture, is videotaped, studied, scrutinized by experts who write reports analyzing their every nuance. They sit around a conference table and talk. ![]() They meet in secret and do not reveal their names. They chose the theme for the 1988 Reagan-Gorbachev summit in Moscow ("A brighter future and a safer world for all people") and they demanded relief from the horror and the heartbreak of "Dorito breath." They okayed colored bikini underwear for men. They decided to remove the red bandanna from Aunt Jemima's head. They nixed the dollar coin but gave the go-ahead for genetically engineered tomatoes. They were responsible for the change in Bill Clinton's hairdo during the 1992 campaign and for the appearance of Willie Horton in the 1988 race. They determine what songs will be heard on the radio, what shows will be seen on TV. They decide what colors M&M's will come in. We compare the average H I content for galaxies within substructure to those not in substructure. Results: Using the Dressler-Shectman test, we find 15 substructures within the footprint of the Westerbork Coma Survey. With so few of the Coma galaxies directly detected in H I, we used the H I stacking technique to probe the average H I content below what can be directly detected. Methods: We applied the Dressler-Shectman test to our newly compiled redshift catalogue of the Coma cluster to search for substructure. It is unclear which environment has a stronger effect: the local environment (i.e., the substructure within the cluster), or the cluster itself.Īims: Using the new H I data from the Westerbork Coma Survey, we explore the average H I content of galaxies across the cluster comparing galaxies that reside in substructure to those that do not. These very dense environments tend to be home to higher numbers of evolved galaxies than found in lower-density environments. Galaxy clusters are some of largest structures in the universe. Read: The plan to make Harvey Weinstein a hero One of the revelations in She Said was a memo written to Weinstein by the attorney Lisa Bloom in December 2016 in which Bloom suggested discrediting any allegations McGowan might make against Weinstein by planting negative stories in the media “re her becoming increasingly unglued.” It’s difficult to fully conceive of the toll this kind of mental and emotional campaign against someone could take. He’d had McGowan tailed by former Mossad agents in an effort to uncover what she might reveal about him in her then-unpublished memoir, Brave. He’d also blacklisted her and other women, smearing their reputations and enlisting magazine editors, lawyers, and private security forces to help. Weinstein hadn’t just assaulted her 20 years ago, McGowan said. But McGowan, during the same period, was struggling. Kantor and Twohey’s work for The New York Times, along with that of The New Yorker’s Ronan Farrow, won a Pulitzer Prize in 2018. Her accusations sparked an investigation in which a substantial number of women finally agreed to go on the record with accusations against Weinstein in the months that followed, subsequent stories revealed hundreds more men who had reportedly abused their power. She Said, Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey’s book about how they broke the story of Weinstein’s alleged abuses in Hollywood, describes how their reporting process began with McGowan’s tweets. It’s hard to imagine any of what happened post-Weinstein transpiring without McGowan, whose 2016 tweets about being raped by a studio head she couldn’t name were the media equivalent of putting a lit match to a fuse. ![]() ![]() (Weinstein has denied all allegations against him in 1997, he paid McGowan a $100,000 settlement precluding her from legal action.) “One of the reasons I got out of America,” she said, “was to reclaim my life.” So what now? And she described the discomfort of being back in New York, the city that was long synonymous with Harvey Weinstein, who McGowan says raped her at the Sundance Film Festival in 1997, and whose criminal trial on charges of sexual assault against other women began this week. She explained her love of London, where the artistic community welcomed her without attaching any of the asterisks that have dogged her for decades as an actor in Hollywood. In person, McGowan looked elfin, with her cropped blond hair, and was surprisingly gentle in manner-not at all like her pugnacious and unpredictable presence online. “Imagine, every time you meet someone new they look at you like you’re maybe insane. “I’m perceived very differently here,” the activist and former actor told me over tea in the bar of the Algonquin Hotel, while Christmas music played in the background.
